Ask to See Real Work, Not Just a Portfolio Page
A logo wall means nothing. Ask for two or three live websites they've built recently, in a business similar in size to yours, and actually visit them on your phone. Half the "portfolio" sites out there look fine on desktop and fall apart on mobile.
Find Out Who's Actually Building Your Site
Some agencies subcontract the actual design and development work out. There's nothing wrong with that if it's disclosed, but you want to know who you're really working with and whether there's a single point of contact accountable for the project.
Ask What Happens After Launch
A website isn't a one-time deliverable. Find out upfront: does the agency offer maintenance, security updates, and support after the site goes live, or do they hand you the files and disappear? This is usually where cheaper quotes fall apart later.
Compare Timelines Honestly
If one agency quotes two weeks for a full custom website and another quotes six, ask why. Sometimes the faster one is more efficient — sometimes they're using a template and calling it custom.
